Pilates Tip of the Month: Opposition

Try This at Home!

At its core (no pun intended), Pilates is about creating more space and stability in the spine. How do we achieve this? Through opposition!

Sounds good, but what does that really mean?

Let’s use a plank position as an example, something everyone knows, even if you don’t do Pilates. While holding a plank, think about reaching the crown of your head forward while pressing back through your heels. Reaching your head and heels away from each other creates more resistance, which in turn creates more length and stability.

While simply holding a plank is beneficial, adding opposition allows you to deepen into the exercise so you get more out of it.

Play with this for yourself and see if you can feel the difference.
